High-Frequency Words – Taught in a Way That Makes Sense

Many children are asked to memorise long lists of high-frequency words, but memorisation alone doesn’t work for most learners.
In ParentEd, the 100 most common words are taught in a manageable, structured order. This means your child learns each word at the point when they already know the sounds or rules needed to read and spell it.
Instead of guessing, they use skills – building understanding step by step so that reading and spelling become easier and more confident.

Blending Mats
Blending mats, are a simple tool we use throughout the ParentEd learning packs to help children hear each sound in a word and match it to a letter.

  • For blending (reading): Place a letter in each box, say the sounds one by one, then slide your finger underneath to blend them together (e.g. /s/ /a/ /t/ → sat).

  • For segmenting (spelling): Say a word slowly, move a counter into a box for each sound you hear, then write the matching letters in the boxes.

This hands-on approach helps children slow down, focus on the order of sounds, and build strong foundations for reading and spelling.
