What Makes a Successful Reader?
Typical Reading Milestones
Every child learns to read at their own pace, and no two reading journeys are exactly the same. These milestones provide a general guide to the skills children are commonly developing at each stage of primary school. Use them to understand where your child is now and discover simple ways to support their next steps.
Remember: children develop at different rates. If your child is finding something difficult, it doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem. They may simply need more time, more practice or a different teaching approach.
🌱 Nursery – Primary 1
Building Strong Reading Foundations
At this stage, children are learning that spoken words are made up of sounds and that print carries meaning. Before children become confident readers, they need strong oral language, listening skills and a love of books.
Children are typically learning to:
✅ Enjoy listening to stories every day
✅ Join in with nursery rhymes and repetitive stories
✅ Recognise and produce rhyming words
✅ Hear the first sound in simple words
✅ Recognise some letter names and letter sounds
✅ Blend and segment simple words using taught sounds
✅ Begin reading simple decodable words
✅ Recognise some common high-frequency words
✅ Hold a book correctly and understand how books work
✅ Talk about pictures and retell simple stories
💡 Parent Tip: At this stage, the goal isn't to race ahead—it's to build strong foundations. Reading together, talking about stories and practising little and often will make the biggest difference.

🌿 Primary 2 – Primary 4
Becoming a Confident Reader
Children now begin to move from "learning to read" towards "reading to learn". Word reading becomes more automatic, allowing them to focus more on understanding and enjoying what they read.
Children are typically learning to:
✅ Read increasingly fluently with fewer pauses
✅ Decode unfamiliar words using phonics knowledge
✅ Recognise most common high-frequency words automatically
✅ Read aloud with improving expression
✅ Retell stories in sequence
✅ Answer literal comprehension questions
✅ Make simple predictions
✅ Explain the meaning of new vocabulary using context
✅ Read independently for short periods
✅ Develop confidence reading a range of fiction and non-fiction texts
💡 Parent Tip: Fluency develops through repeated reading. Re-reading familiar books helps children build confidence and frees up brain space for understanding what they read.

🌳 Primary 5 – Primary 7
Reading to Understand and Think Critically
At this stage, reading becomes a powerful tool for learning across the curriculum. Children continue to develop deeper comprehension, richer vocabulary and greater independence.
Children are typically learning to:
✅ Read a wide variety of texts confidently
✅ Read with fluency, expression and accuracy
✅ Infer meaning that isn't directly stated
✅ Summarise key information
✅ Explain and discuss new vocabulary
✅ Identify the author's purpose
✅ Compare texts and characters
✅ Justify opinions using evidence from the text
✅ Read independently for enjoyment and information
✅ Apply reading strategies across different curriculum subjects
💡 Parent Tip: Continue reading together—even with older children. Talking about books, news articles or interesting topics is one of the best ways to develop vocabulary and comprehension.
